No Secrets, No Lies
Robin Stone, a sexual abuse survivor, was a featured speaker at the 2002 Darkness to Light conference. She also led an 'in the round' forum for the young adults of Charleston. At that time she had written an article for Essence magazine revealing the sexual abuse that had haunted her journey from childhood to womanhood. As a result of her work with Darkness to Light, , Ms. Stone highlights Darkness to Light's 7 Steps to Protecting Children in her chapter titled "Help Yourself" to help parents become proactive around the issue of child sexual abuse.
Rahema, Allen and Brenda are among the many who share their experiences in No Secrets, No Lies, a self help book on child sexual abuse in African American families. More than 70% of sexual assaults are not reported to the police, and estimates are that even more are not disclosed at all. Left untreated, the childhood wounds of abuse can lead to lifelong mental and physical problems.
Through powerful collections of individual stories from recovering drug addicts to corporate leaders alike, author Robin D. Stone explores the cultural taboos and social dynamics that keep black families silent and have enabled sexual abuse to continue for generations Among them:
- A legacy of slavery and stereotypes about black sexuality
- Distrust of the police and authority figures
- Reluctance to seek counseling or therapy
- Reluctance to turn offenders into "the system"
No Secrets, No Lies speaks to:
- Survivors, telling them they are not at fault, not alone and how they can find help
- Parents, explaining how to keep children safe and help them recover
- Healers, identifying problems that survivors face
- Family and friends, showing ways to lend support
| Robin D. Stone is a former executive editor of Essence magazine and founding editor-in-chief of essence.com. She was also an editor for The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Detroit Free Press, and Family Circle, and has written numerous publications As a 2002-03 Kaiser Media Fellow, she researched the impact of sexual abuse, focused on black families. |
